Today our focus switches to the Euro area and we can start with a measure that we know is closely watched by policymakers at the European Central Bank or ECB. After signalling a renewed reduction in private sector business activity in the eurozone during April, provisional PMI® survey data for May pointed to a deepening downturn. In ordinary times ECB policymakers might be considering an interest-rate cut from the present rate of 2%. That would be reinforced by this.
