The latest official labour market data today illustrates the ‘urgent need’ for the government to tackle the unemployment crisis among those in their 50s and 60s as well as younger people, a charity has said. The Centre for Ageing Better highlighted that the ONS data has suggested the employment rate for the 50-64 age group now stands at 72.2% over the past 12 months. This means employment rates for this age group are 12.9 percentage points lower than for 35-49-year-olds. The charity last week launched a campaign to urge the government to keep better track of the number of over-50s not in education, training, employment or retirement, or “Neter”, alongside young people not in education, training, employment, or Neet.
