Fresh food inflation across the euro area accelerated in August, increasing cost pressure for supermarket produce buyers. Eurostat's August 2026 flash estimate shows unprocessed food prices rising 2.7% year on year, compared with 2.4% in July. On a monthly basis, unprocessed food prices declined 0.1%. Fresh produce categories are exposed to weather, crop conditions, short shelf lives, and seasonal availability. The August figures indicate renewed procurement cost pressure for fruit and vegetables, with potential implications for sourcing, promotions, and supplier negotiations. Weather remains a factor in fresh food pricing. ECB analysis estimates that the 2025 summer heatwave increased euro-area unprocessed food prices by around 0.4 to 0.
