The European Central Bank has opened applications until October 27 for eurozone e‑commerce and mobile merchants to join a one‑year 2027 pilot of digital euro payments to test checkout integration, usability and technical and operational aspects; the pilot tokens will not be legal tender and participation is voluntary with no payment from the bank. Selection will weigh merchant reach and connections to payment infrastructure after the ECB in July chose 36 payment service providers from over 50 applicants, including Revolut, Stripe, Deutsche Bank and UniCredit, and merchant feedback could directly influence the CBDC design and adoption across crypto and payment rails.
