Sweden prime minister to resign as left-wing bloc seals narrow election win

Sweden’s prime minister says he will resign after the left-wing opposition secured a narrow victory in the country’s general election, though it faces tough negotiations ahead to form a coalition government. The vote count ended on Thursday with the Swedish Election Authority announcing that the four left-wing opposition parties won 176 seats in the 349-seat parliament in Stockholm, the Riksdag. The four parties that make up or support the outgoing conservative-led government took 173 seats, meaning that the left-wing bloc won with a slim three-seat majority . Only about 50,000 votes separated the two sides in the country of 10.6 million people. Shortly after the results were announced, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he would resign.
