The Humboldt County unemployment rate increased to 5.6% in August, up from 5.3% in July, according to data released Friday by the California Employment Development Department. While the state touted adding more than 39,000 jobs in August, Humboldt County only accounted for 200 of those. Across all industries, growth was zero to minimal month over month. The sole industry with any noticeable growth — local government — grew by 400 jobs between July and August, a 4.2% increase. Year over year, there are noticeable declines — manufacturing of nondurable goods and retail trade both are down 10% or more from August 2025.
