Chancellor Friedrich Merz set a defiant tone after blows sustained by his conservative CDU party in the votes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin. "The result in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania cannot be talked away, it's a disaster," Merz said in a statement.
