Solar was the leading source of renewable electricity in the EU, contributing 41.6 per cent of total renewable electricity in the second quarter of 2026, up from 37.0 per cent in Q2 2025. Wind was the second-largest source at 27.7 per cent, followed by hydro power at 22.6 per cent. Combustible renewable fuels accounted for 7.7 per cent, while geothermal and other energy sources contributed 0.4 per cent, the Eurostat said in a press release. Among EU countries, Latvia recorded the highest share of electricity produced from renewable sources in the second quarter of 2026 at 97.7 per cent, mostly from hydro and solar, followed by Denmark at 94.3 per cent, mostly from wind, and Croatia at 92.2 per cent, mostly from hydro.
