Natalia Korinets, the Reserve’s Deputy Director for Research, told Ukrinform this in a comment. According to her, the Reserve was allocated 84 hectares free of charge in Odesa region’s Bolhrad district, near the Tarutyne Steppe, where a military training ground was located several decades ago. Researchers have been conducting scientific work on the allocated site for several years. “Scientists are studying steppe recovery to develop methodologies for de-occupied and war-affected territories. Experience shows that terrain altered by shell craters, trenches, and dugouts does not level out on its own for decades. Therefore, these damaged areas need to be filled in to enable the ecosystem to regenerate fully.
