The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 5,130 initial unemployment applications were filed in Florida last week, up from a revised count of 5,013 the week ending Sept. 12. The state has been under 6,000 claims a week since the end of August, with the weekly average since the start of the year now at 5,880. Nationally, the department estimated 197,000 claims were filed last week, a decrease of 1,000 from the prior week. Florida’s unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percent to 4.5 percent on Friday, representing 502,000 unemployed Floridians in August from a workforce of 11.1 million.
