It will take years for AI investments by major tech companies to pay off. But before that happens, companies have to break even — and that will also take years. Goldman Sachs strategist Ryan Hammond crunched some numbers and thinks hyperscalers like Amazon (AMZN), Oracle (ORCL), and Microsoft (MSFT) need to generate about $300 billion in AI revenue in the "next few years" to break even on their investments. The hyperscalers have a ways to go before reaching that number, according to Hammond. Hyperscaler cloud revenues have accelerated sharply this year, annualizing at about $70 billion above the pre-AI trend in the second quarter of 2026.
