The ministry noted that recently implemented security measures made it possible to detect the attack and prevent it from spreading further. Authorities established that hackers gained unauthorized access to the EPEKIS information system, which provided public services related to the issuance of personal and other documents, as well as consultations for Lithuanian citizens and foreigners. The EPEKIS system has not been actively used since 2018 and currently operates as an archival system. It contains archived data on foreigners who had applied for Lithuanian citizenship.
