Yemen’s war disrupts roads and ports, deepening humanitarian crisis

Taiz, Yemen – In mid-September, Mohammed started hearing the sound of shelling and gunfire in the distance from his village in the Jabal Habashi district of Taiz. By the following day, the fighting had intensified, and the sounds were drawing closer. After four years of calm, Yemen’s return to violence had arrived at Jabal Habashi, where the Houthi rebels are attempting to advance in government-held areas. The fighting has left civilians, like the 39-year-old Mohammed, afraid of moving around their homes and farms. Mohammed soon fled his village with his wife and child, heading to the city of Taiz.
