Ethiopia and Eritrea cut diplomatic ties on Thursday after Ethiopia accused its northern neighbor of involvement in renewed fighting in the Tigray region. The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry was the first to announce that it was shutting its embassy in Eritrea "in response to Eritrea's direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence against Ethiopia." The Ethiopian embassy in Eritrea had been reopened in 2018 as part of the rapprochement that culminated in Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed receiving the Nobel Peace Prize . Ethiopia's Foreign Ministry also declared ten Eritrean diplomats "persona non grata", accusing them of "involvement in activities that pose a direct threat to Ethiopia's national security.
