In the last 20 years, only 2010 and 2025 were worse — not counting the three years the country actually lost jobs: 2008, 2009 and 2020. Healthcare did the heavy lifting in September, accounting for about 80% of the month's net gains. Construction, hospitality and manufacturing also grew. The biggest losses came from government, down 17,000, along with information, business services and finance.
