Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) closed at $12.10 on October 2, having lost $7.4 billion over the past twelve months. A dividend is a promise a company makes when it is confident. Ford is still making that promise, at a yield near 5%, in a year it earned nothing at all. Boards do this when they are convinced the loss is temporary and that cutting the payout would cost more in credibility than maintaining it costs in cash. Whether that judgement holds depends entirely on what happens next year.
