A rising unemployment rate in the Sioux Falls metro area has led to losing the spot as the area with the lowest jobless rate in the U.S. The local rate climbed to 2.2 percent in August, up from 1.9 percent in July. The Cleveland metro area’s rate at 1.8 percent was the lowest in the nation, followed by Bismarck, North Dakota, at 2 percent and Rapid City and Minot, North Dakota, at 2.1 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The highest metro area jobless rate in August was in El Centro, California, at 21.9 percent, followed by Yuma, Arizona, at 19 percent.
