A weak jobs report and the AI boom may look like separate stories, but they meet at one pressure point: the cost of borrowed money. The U.S. economy added just 29,000 jobs in September, based on Labor Department data released on Oct. 2. The unemployment rate rose to 4.2% from 4.1%, and payroll gains for July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000 jobs. That softer reading quickly reshaped expectations for the Federal Reserve. The central bank lifted its benchmark rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% on Sept.
