U.S. employers added a disappointing 29,000 jobs in September, and the national unemployment rate also ticked up. Illinois's latest unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, the government reported Friday, a month before voters go to the polls in pivotal midterm elections at a time of discontent over the high cost of living and the state of the economy. Illinois's August unemployment rate, the latest state-level figure available, compares with 4.3 percent a year earlier. About 306,800 people were unemployed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics report. Nationally, the jobless rate ticked up to 4.2 percent. State-level unemployment rates for September will be released Oct. 20.
