As reported by an Ukrinform correspondent in The Hague, during the visit Ukrainian medics learned about the organization of the neonatal intensive care unit and the approaches used by their Dutch colleagues to treat and care for premature babies. Dutch specialists demonstrated advanced technologies and shared a new approach that involves actively engaging parents in their child’s care. The approach was explained by Kiki Ruhe, a Dutch nursing scientist and Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse. “Previously, parents were welcome, but they were not directly involved in caring for their tiny newborns. We now have a great deal of research showing that involving parents is beneficial for the parents themselves, for the children, and for medical staff,” Ruhe said.
