The Labor Department reported Thursday that initial jobless claims, on a seasonally adjusted basis, came in at 197,000 for the week ending Oct. 3, a decrease of 2,000 from the prior reading. The prior week's figure was revised up by 2,000, from 197,000 to 199,000. For the fourth consecutive week, claims have remained in territory not seen since the late 1960s, according to Reuters . The median Wall Street estimate, based on a Reuters poll, called for 200,000 new claims in the most recent week. The four-week moving average, which smooths out week-to-week volatility, fell 2,500 to 198,000. The prior week's average was revised up by 500, to 200,500.
