PARIS — Defense ministers from France and Germany insisted their joint tank project is going well Friday, one day after the French chief of defense staff said it had faltered because of Berlin. The Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) “remains a relevant project,” Armed Forces Minister Catherine Vautrin said, speaking near Bordeaux alongside her German counterpart Boris Pistorius. “I can only wholeheartedly agree, dear Catherine. The MGCS project is not over, it is not dead, it has not been terminated by anyone,” Pistorius echoed. “Quite the contrary: It is a cornerstone project of Franco-German cooperation in land systems.” France’s chief of defense staff, Gen. Fabien Mandon, told lawmakers Thursday that Germany had pulled out of the project.
