Hurricane Simon battered Mexico's west coast on Monday with powerful winds and torrential rain, after several weather systems left at least five people dead and caused widespread damage to property in Pacific coastal communities. The eye of the Category 2 hurricane has remained offshore, although its outer bands have lashed communities located between the Sierra Madre and the Pacific Ocean, near Puerto Vallarta. In the state of Baja California, rescue teams have continued searching for missing people in the coastal city of Ensenada, where floods have swept away vehicles and damaged homes. At least four people have died as a result of post-tropical cyclone Rachel, including a 13-year-old girl, two women and a four-year-old boy.
