US inflation accelerated to 3.7% in September, driven largely by rising petrol prices, adding uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate decision just weeks before the country’s midterm elections. The annual inflation rate rose from 3.4% in August, while consumer prices increased 0.6% month on month, according to data released Wednesday by the US Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, Al Jazeera reported. Energy costs were the main driver of the monthly increase. Petrol prices rose 9.1% in September, accounting for more than half of the overall rise in consumer prices. They were also 34.2% higher than a year earlier, according to the report.
