India’s labor market showed signs of broader improvement in September, with the headline unemployment rate holding steady at 5.0% for a second consecutive month as employment indicators strengthened in urban areas. The stability in the headline rate is encouraging, particularly as the rate came in below expectations. The share of the working-age population that is employed edged up compared to a year ago, while urban employment and female participation showed signs of increasing. Rural India continued to provide support, with unemployment remaining lower than a year earlier.
