New Jersey payrolls increased by 14,900 in September and the state’s unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage point to 4.2%, according to data produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Thursday. The state’s unemployment rate is now 1.3 percentage points lower than it was 12 months ago when it was 5.5%. September marked the first time in almost four years that New Jersey’s monthly unemployment rate did not exceed the national jobless rate – which was also 4.2% for September.
