The Massachusetts job market showed some life in September, as employers picked up hiring, the labor force expanded, and the unemployment rate held steady. Employers added 3,500 jobs last month, partially offsetting a revised loss of 5,600 jobs in August, according to federal data released by the state. The gains were paced by two sectors that had been shrinking: financial activities and professional and business services. Private education and health services, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing all shed jobs. The labor force — the number of people with a job or actively looking for one — saw its biggest monthly increase in more than two years, a sign that more people believe jobs are available and worth taking.
