Surging energy prices drove up inflation in September, with gasoline accounting for more than half of the monthly rise in the U.S. Consumer Price Index, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% from the prior month, faster than August's 3.9% increase and up 34% over the past year, while other motor fuels, which include diesel, soared 15.3% on the month and were 74% higher Y/Y. The price of unleaded gasoline, which most consumers use at the pump, has climbed 45% since late February, when the U.S. and Israel launched the Iran war, and the price of diesel has surged 70% during the same period. Airfares, which are highly sensitive to fuel costs, were up 22% from a year earlier, according to the BLS.
