A court in the Kenyan city of Mombasa is set to deliver a verdict in the trial of a self-proclaimed pastor and his associates accused of the murder of 191 people, all but one of whom were children. Paul Mackenzie and several of his followers were charged with murder after his cult was alleged to have forced children to starve so they could “meet Jesus”. They have pleaded not guilty and denied charges in other cases, including terrorism, radicalisation, and stopping children from attaining an education. Mackenzie was the head of the apocalyptic Good News International Ministries, which he established with his wife in 2003 in the southeastern coastal city of Malindi. Before that, he was a taxi driver in Nairobi.
