Elon Musk has a major stake in both companies - Matt Rourke/AP Elon Musk has said he wants to merge SpaceX and Tesla, in a deal that would combine his two trillion-dollar companies. Mr Musk said both companies – worth a combined $3.5tn (£2.6tn) – were discussing a deal, and had established committees to look into the idea of merging. "I do think there's a lot of merit to combining the companies," he said. A tie-up between the rocket and artificial intelligence (AI) company and the electric carmaker has long been rumoured, but rumours of a combination have picked up in recent weeks. Mr Musk is legally excluded from the process of considering a deal, because of his major stakes in both companies.
