BRUSSELS — The center-right European People's Party joined forces with far-right lawmakers Thursday to push through a vote delaying a key EU climate law governing the methane emissions of oil and gas companies. It was the latest example of the European Parliament's biggest group ignoring old taboos and working with the far right to pass legislation weakening environmental rules. The EU Methane Regulation requires fossil fuel companies to monitor and report emissions of methane, a potent greenhouse gas that's a major cause of global warming. The requirements were due to come into force in 2027, but the Commission last week proposed delaying implementation by a year following intense lobbying from the oil and gas lobby and the U.S. government.
