Eurozone consumer sentiment eroded at a faster-than-expected pace in October to reach its lowest level in five months as several countries witness public unrest against a host of issues from the rising cost of living to poor education infrastructure. The poor sentiment comes as governments struggle to tackle rising debt and inflation concerns due to the energy price shock caused by the escalating tensions in the Middle East. The flash consumer confidence index sunk to -17.9 from -16.5 in September, which was the weakest score since May's reading of -18.9, preliminary data of the monthly survey by the European Commission showed on Thursday. The corresponding measure for the whole of European Union plummeted to -17.3 from -15.8 in the previous month.
