Reviewed by Rami Haddad , Editor-in-Chief · Last update: 2026.10.24 The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, as layoffs remained near historically low levels and most US workers continued to enjoy a degree of job security. The US Labor Department reported on Thursday that initial jobless claims increased by 1,000 to 199,000 in the week ended October 10, compared with the previous week. The four-week moving average of claims, which helps smooth out weekly volatility, rose by 250 to 198,500. Jobless claims serve as a rough indicator of layoffs and are closely monitored by economists for signs of where the labor market may be heading.
