HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston area shed more than 7,300 jobs last month, the second-largest decline in nearly 40 years, according to the latest jobs report. Mohammad Ahmadizadeh, an economist with the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, said the drop was not a surprise. "We saw slower job ads. The number of job ads has been at the lower level than earlier this year," Ahmadizadeh said. The biggest declines were in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, trade, transportation and warehousing, and health services, Ahmadizadeh said. He said the numbers were also affected by changing school schedules. With schools starting in August, companies hire less in September, leading to fewer jobs being created.
