This opinion was expressed in an interview with Ukrinform by Ukrainian military officer and diplomat Lieutenant General Vasyl Servatiuk, former First Deputy Head of the State Border Service (2014–2019). “With such an aggressive neighbor [as Russia], this is truly a strategic mistake. If the first groups of so-called ‘volunteers’ from Russia had been met with armored personnel carriers (APCs) equipped with heavy weapons, then perhaps we would have seen a completely different scenario. But at that time, the prevailing view was that Ukraine would never, ever go to war with anyone. And that friendship with our ‘brothers’ would last forever. Of course, that was just Russian propaganda,” he noted.
