This view was expressed in an interview with Ukrinform by Ukrainian military officer and diplomat Lieutenant General Vasyl Servatiuk, former First Deputy Head of the State Border Guard Service (2014–2019). “There was a prevailing notion in the country that Ukraine would never, ever go to war with anyone. And that friendship with our ‘brothers’ would last forever. Of course, that was Russian propaganda—the idea that no one would attack. And only later did it become clear that this was a massive covert operation, which explains why the Russians refused for so long to legally demarcate the border. The attempts we made found no support—not only in Russia, but even among our European partners,” he noted.
