The first hurdle Democrats must clear on their path to Senate control is holding the seats they already have. Of the 13 Democratic-held seats up for election, Georgia, Michigan and New Hampshire are among the most competitive–all three states were decided by fewer than three percentage points in the 2024 presidential election. With Republican Vice President JD Vance’s ability to break tie votes, Democrats need 51 seats to win control of the chamber. They will also need to pick up four more seats, and their best pickup opportunities are in Alaska, Maine, North Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. There are 35 U.S. Senate seats up for election in 2026, including two special elections in Ohio and Florida.
