Spain and the Netherlands have proposed two former heads of national central banks to succeed Christine Lagarde, who will leave the ECB on 7 February 2027. The Eurogroup will examine the candidacies on 9 November. The appointment remains in the hands of euro area leaders, after consultation with the European Parliament and the ECB.
