Spain and the Netherlands have proposed two former heads of national central banks to succeed Christine Lagarde, who will leave the ECB on 7 February 2027. The Eurogroup will examine the candidacies on 9 November. The appointment remains in the hands of euro area leaders, after consultation with the European Parliament and the ECB. Pablo Hernández de Cos, General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements, and Klaas Knot, former president of the Dutch central bank, are the two candidates proposed for the presidency of the European Central Bank.
