The Bank of England (BOE), the UK's central bank, has raised its benchmark interest rate for the first time in three years and three months. With rising energy prices stemming from the prolonged war in the Middle East intensifying inflationary pressure, it has returned to tightening policy. As the possibility of further rate increases is raised, the pound has climbed to its highest level in 10 years since the 2016 Brexit referendum on the UK's withdrawal from the European Union. On the 5th (local time), the BOE held a Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting and raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points (1 bp = 0.01 percentage point), from 3.75% to 4.00% annually. This was the UK's first rate increase since August 2023.
